Custom Inflatable Missile: An 80ft Replica
The Atlas Missile Museum of Texas, dedicated to preserving the legacy of space exploration, approached us with an extraordinary task: to create a 1:1 inflatable replica of the Atlas Missile. This iconic missile launched the first GPS satellite into orbit in 1978.
Their vision was clear yet ambitious. The inflatable missile, standing 80 feet tall, would be suspended inside the original missile silo—where the real Atlas 64F missile was launched. This would serve as a visually stunning centerpiece, capturing the historical significance of the Atlas program and providing visitors with an immersive experience.
The project came with specific requirements:
-
Precision: The inflatable had to be an accurate 1:1 replica of the Atlas Missile, with authentic proportions and details.
-
Size and Dimensions: The replica needed to match the exact measurements, including a height of 80ft, a 10ft diameter main rocket, and a width of 12.5ft.
-
Durability: The inflatable had to be lightweight and durable, designed for long-term suspension inside the missile silo.

Creating an inflatable of this scale and importance required planning and collaboration.
Design and Scale Accuracy
Using the provided specifications of 15ft L x 12.5ft W x 80ft H, the design team of Custom Inflatables carefully created a 3D model of the Atlas Missile. This guaranteed the missile's proportions, markings, and overall look were accurate and visually impactful.
The 3D model was designed with detailed references to maintain authenticity, but as noted, some minor imperfections in the handmade sample could be corrected during production.
Suspension Integration
Given the unique display location, anchoring points were added to the inflatable to allow for secure suspension inside the silo. These were tested rigorously to ensure the inflatable could remain in place without compromising safety or stability.

The completed 80ft inflatable Atlas Missile and delivered to the Atlas Missile Museum of Texas and suspended in the original missile silo. The replica captured the monumental scale and legacy of the Atlas Missile program, serving as a key attraction for visitors.
The museum now has a centerpiece that visually tells the story of the missile that launched the first GPS satellite, allowing guests to connect with the historical significance of this groundbreaking achievement.
This inflatable replica represents more than just a display piece. It’s a tribute to a pivotal moment in space exploration history, now preserved in an innovative and visually impactful way.
